CHIEF ENGINEER

The Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh require an experienced Chief Engineer to manage and maintain the Hotel and Spa facility, including the physical building structure, all plant and FF&E, and related equipment in accordance with energy conservation and preventative maintenance programs. The role combines both project management and project support responsibilities. You will ensure that all legal requirements are complied with, and that budgetary goals are met. The position is also responsible for the safety and security of guests and associates of the Hotel, especially in relation to Fire & Life Safety, Evacuation and Security issues. You will ensure full compliance with, and implementation of, UK Fire & Life Safety Legislation, plus Corporate and Hotel policies and procedures.

Duties Include:

General

· Manage the day-to-day activities of the Engineering team to ensure smooth operation of hotel & Spa

· Assist to prepare all Capital Project Releases and co-ordinate all related work.

· Prepare technical data, bidding, project work, alterations for the property, having knowledge of building regulations and codes.

· Project documentation, project briefs

· Risk and issues management, quality checks

· Project planning, resource allocation and monitoring, budget management

· Project communication, project board meetings and communication plans

· Prepare, update and implement Standard Operating Procedures within the department.

· Prepare department manpower schedules in accordance with the business demands of the hotel. Oversee daily and weekly rosters.

· Design, maintain and ensure the planned preventative maintenance programme for the building, plant and equipment is operational to maintain a high level of guest comfort and safety.

· Key relationship and communication with major stakeholders

· Ensure work schedules are prioritized in accordance with guest needs.

· Ensure that CAFM system is fully utilized by the team and hotel departments.

· Ensure supervision and control of line staff and contractors are effective to ensure optimum performance, efficient and safe working procedures, meeting all legislative standards.

· Responsible for reviewing, revising, updating and implementing Security and Safety procedures

· Conduct regular Fire Safety inspections within the buildings, liaising with the Fire Department as necessary; ensuring fire doors / corridors are effective and safe.

· Implement and actively supervise the hotel’s energy management programme.

· Oversee water treatment programmes.in accordance with L8 Compliance

Essential functions

Conduct regular walk-abouts, visually assessing the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of the physical structure(s) of the hotel and spa; all mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems and any other related equipment.

Verify completion of all routine maintenance on public spaces, meeting rooms, ballrooms, outlets, back of the house spaces, and external areas. Verify completion of all repairs, replacement, and renovation works throughout the hotel and spa.

Assist in hiring, training and development, supervision, and disciplining of all staff in the Engineering Department

Adhere to all corporate purchasing policies and controls, including, but not limited to, all outside contractor bids, budgets, and schedules. Adhere to all Health & Safety policies and all other Company policies as required. Follow prescribed safety procedures for personnel, contractors and equipment at all times.

Maintain effective Energy Management and Preventive Maintenance programs, and conduct special training for other operating departments on the safe and efficient use of equipment and energy in the hotel.

Inform management on a regular basis regarding the specific and overall condition of the building structure(s), related systems, and equipment offering prudent, cost effective proposals for maintaining these systems. Access and input information via the computer and generate required reports.

Managing Staff

· Responsibility for managing/supervising and dealing with all staff engineering staff

· Presenting to all staff and key management on various matters i.e. progress/strategic meetings

· Offering the team possible solutions to problems that are identified in advance and ensuring that corrective actions are implemented

· Organising team meetings – weekly or monthly and setting up action points from same.

· Organising informal discussions with problem employees and if necessary organising disciplinary and grievances with staff when required

· Training of new starts on the operational part of the job or organising another member of staff to do this.

· Have responsibility for recruitment of own team/area

· Ensure that all daily work orders are allocated and work completed on time.

· Responsibility for the maintenance of training documentation

Key Relationships:

· Ensure full liaison with the Cluster Director of Engineering, Hotel Manager and Department Heads.

· Develop good working relationships with local police, especially for VIP functions, etc.

· Develop good working relationships with the Fire department, local Environmental Officers, etc.

· Hold regular Department communication meetings.

· Project a pleasant, positive and professional image at all times.

Person Specification

Education

· HND/HNC Engineering or Electrical.

· Professional qualification in Engineering or Electrical vocation.

· Prince 2 project management

· Pool plant operators course

· NEBOSH certificate level

Experience

· Five to seven years in a major hotel, hospital, or building, in a managerial / supervisory capacity.

· Experience of managing people and the provision of both hard and soft facility services to a client.

· Qualification in a facilities/technical based discipline and experience of sub-contractor supervision is an advantage

· Have a technical background in engineering possessing good knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment

· Must have thorough knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems, power, water and gas supplies

· Be fully conversant with Microsoft Office particularly Excel and Outlook.

· Good understanding of Health & Safety and Compliance

· Must be flexible in assisting other managers/supervisors as required

· Have an excellent understanding of fire safety and be familiar with legislative requirements
